- Description
- J.J. Moloney was a much-respected figure in Newcastle. For decades he was a fierce nationalist, a newspaper editor, an advocate for Australian history, an environmentalist, and an Aboriginal rights campaigner, long before such terminology was in use. Moloney was present at some of the pivotal moments in early Aboriginal political history, fighting alongside prominent Aboriginal activists Fred Maynard, Sid Ridgeway and Tom Lacey as they pioneered organised Aboriginal political protest in the 1920s. Sadly, like the Aboriginal activists, Moloney has slipped from memory and history itself. This chapter seeks to bring this courageous individual back to the rightful place he deserves.
